News______________________________________________________ From FiberClay Council® 17 Pondfield Lane Darien, CT 09820 Contact: Roger Bognar: (203) 655-9316 Peter Marcalus (201) 703-6404 February, 1996 FiberClay Council® FORMED TO AQUAINT THE PUBLIC ABOUT BENEFITS OF FiberClay™ PRODUCT-- A NEW MATERIAL MADE FROM REYCYLING Paper manufacturers join together to extol benefits of FiberClay™ product as a viable commercial and consumer product with high ecological characteristics. (Darien) - A forward thinking group of North American paper manufacturers, recently established the FiberClay Council® to provide a forum in which industry segments can share information and ideas to promote the use of FiberClay™ product---a co-product of papermaking-for various uses in agricultural, industrial, civil engineering and household products. Members of the FiberClay Council® are primarily in the business of making paper products from recycling. Their goal is to get the message out about a new co-product that is also manufactured as recyclable paper is processed in their papermaking facilities. The association has brand named this new product “FiberClay™” - it’s a tested and proven material with a broad range of commercial and consumer uses. Each member of the Council manufactures a range of different FiberClay™ products. Products are made using proprietary processes where residuals from papermaking are recycled and re-engineered to achieve specific performance features. Sustainably made products using FiberClay™ include: soil amendments, engineered landscaping medium, animal bedding for livestock, spill absorbents and cat litter. According to FiberClay Council® Executive Director, Roger Bognar, “The papermaking industry has a long history of working with city, state, and federal governments to implement recycling initiatives and work with regulatory agencies. The FiberClay Council® mission is to take recycling to the next step by promoting the use of FiberClay™ product in agricultural, consumer products, industrial, construction and civic applications.” FiberClay™ product is well suited for many applications. For recommended uses, this family of recycled product is safe, non-hazardous and complies with the many stringent regulations established by Federal, State and (Canadian) Provincial governments. (2) FiberClay Council® members have pledged to work together to encourage support from government and public officials for the use of FiberClay™ product as a replacement for traditional materials. Unlike traditional materials FiberClay™ products are made with 100% recycled content, they are engineered to have more predictable performance and their manufacture preserves natural resources. The Council’s goals are also to educate public leaders about the inherent benefits of FiberClay product uses and to provide them with knowledge and education for their constituents. In the future, the Council also plans to bring the FiberClay™ products have been tested by numerous university and independent labs to document their safety and comparative value to traditionally mined and non-sustainably produced materials. The Next Level of Recycling State-of-the-art papermakers like the members of the FiberClay Council® use raw material papermaking fibers from harvested resources or by paper recycling. Over 65% of all paper products now manufactured in the United States are made in part, or entirely from recycled cellulose fibers. Members of the FiberClay Council® have made substantial investments to bring their environmentally progressive paper recycling facilities to the next level; that of sustainability. Now, instead of only utilizing the cellulose fibers in recyclable paper, the other components of those original paper grades are made into new products. This new level of recycling prevents millions of pounds of recycling residual materials from being disposed of as waste in landfills each day. FiberClay™ product manufacturing is the result of using virtually all of the valuable ingredients in recyclable paper.
